University Award

The award “Tree of Life” was developed during the foundation phase of studies at the University of Wuppertal. As part of a design competition, a concept for an award was created that could be presented on special occasions within the university context. The object symbolizes the university as a foundational pillar within the course of life. Three movable wooden spheres can be freely positioned, making the award interactive. These spheres represent the different paths and directions that may be taken during one’s academic journey. The vertical column on which they are placed forms the structural base of the object, symbolically reflecting the university as the supporting foundation.

Experimental Design

The initial six awards were individually fabricated through a hands-on manufacturing process. Each piece was milled from aluminum, while laser-engraved plaques were integrated to achieve a precise and material-driven finish, resulting from direct machining and fabrication work.

The final design symbolizes the university through the deliberate use of color accents aligned with its corporate identity, as well as through the concept of a life pillar represented by individual wooden spheres.
